Total Joint Replacement

Joint replacement surgery is needed when the joint becomes worn out, usually due to arthritis. The surgeon removes the damaged ends of your joint and replaces it with an artificial implant. The specially designed metal and plastic parts are custom fit to your joint to restore smooth movement.

The Patient Journey

  • Family Doctor or Nurse Practitioner
If your family doctor or nurse practitioner determine that you would benefit from a total joint replacement they may refer you to the Rapid Access Clinic.

  • Rapid Access Clinic
The Rapid Access Clinic provides patients with an assessment by an Advanced Practice Provider within four weeks of when the completed referral is received by the Central Intake Program.

  • Consultation with Your Surgeon
If it is determined that surgery is appropriate you will receive a referral to see an Orthopedic Surgeon. This appointment will be scheduled through the surgeon’s office.

  • Preadmission Clinic
You will need to visit the Preadmission Clinic at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital prior to your surgery. This typically happens 2-4 weeks before your surgery. The appointment will take 2-3 hours to complete.

  • Prehab Education
The Prehab program offers educational sessions for patients undergoing total joint replacement surgery.

  • Your Surgery
Your surgeon’s office will provide you with details about your surgery including how to prepare, where to go and when to arrive.

  • Outpatient Physiotherapy
Regular exercise to restore strength and mobility to your joint and a gradual return to everyday activities are important for your full recovery after total joint replacement. The amount of physiotherapy required varies from person to person.
