The Paediatric Asthma Clinic

OTMHMDH

The Paediatric Asthma Clinic at Halton Healthcare operates every Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and is available to children and adolescents ranging from newborn to 17 years of age who are struggling with asthma. The clinic focuses on the needs of children who continue to be hospitalized, visit the Emergency Department often, miss school days and meet the criteria of having poor asthma control, according to the Canadian Consensus Guidelines.

A Paediatric Respirologist and Asthma Educator will work together to provide patients and caregivers with the tools to safely and effectively manage their asthma, improve quality of life and decrease utilization of emergency medical services.

Referral to the program is required from the Emergency Department, Post Emergency Paediatric Clinic (PEPC) and community Paediatricians.

Services include:

  • Consultation with a Paediatric Respirologist
  • Diagnostic testing (Spirometry) for children 5+ years
  • Education with a certified respiratory educator
  • Asthma action plan for self-management and follow up as needed

What to bring to your appointment?

  • Asthma medications with delivery device (spacer)
  • Action plan if you have one
  • Any questions you may have

What to expect at your appointment?

During the appointment, a Certified Respiratory Educator will review your child’s symptoms and assess how they take their puffers. If your child is over the age of 5 years, a breathing test (spirometry) will be performed at the start of each session.

After this session, you will see the Paediatric Respirologist who will review all aspects of your child’s breathing problems and clarify the diagnosis.  Medications (if needed) will be reviewed and you will be provided with a follow-up appointment and written Action Plan to help you manage your child’s asthma. Your primary healthcare provider will receive a written summary after each clinic visit.
